Paragon Cairns

About "Zach" by Riley DeVos

Zach is an outstanding dog with a presence you cannot deny.  He loves to show and anybody who watches him in the ring will agree.  Zach has a very masculine head with wonderfully expressive, dark brown eyes that make you want to melt.  His tail carriage is dead on and he firmly holds his topline whether he's just standing or gaiting.  The last line from the Cairn Standard perfectly describes Zach in the ring, "Should move freely and easily on a loose lead, should not cringe on being handled, should stand up on their toes and show with marked terrier characteristics"  (AKC Cairn Standard, Approved May 10, 1938).

Zach in the show ring...

Zach was to a great start in the show ring., finishing his Championship with only 3 months of showing when he was a little over 1 year old.  We knew  he was when he took the Best of Breed over the #2 cairn bitch in the country and went on to take a Group IV...at his second show!  It was decided to let him grow up in 2005 and he was my partner in the Junior Showmanship ring, where I was #1 Cairn Terrier Junior and #11 Terrier Junior with Zach's help.  Zach was specialed in 2006 and 2007 and did exceptionally well, especially being my first show dog.

Zach's career...

This little guy has done so many great things.  Zach was invited to the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in 2006 and 2007, where he took back to back 1st  Award of Excellence.  He also had the automatic invitation (must be in the top five of the breed to be invited) to the prestigious Westminster Kennel club two years in a row.

In 2006, he was the first Cairn to win a Group I and at the end of the year, had garnered more Group I's than any other Cairn.  He had an excellent record of over 30 group placements in his career as a special.

He has also been my main dog for Junior Showmanship ring (I have also limitedly handled Am/Can/Int Ch. Paragon's Well Chosen and Ch. Paragon's Harmony of Steele in Juniors), where our successes there easily speak for themselves.

At the time of aging out of Juniors, I was the the top Cairn Junior of all time in three years of competing.  None of this could happen without Zach as my partner.

After Westminster 2008, Zach was retired from the show ring to be able to pursue other events.  We are looking forward to this time to explore the sports of Rally, Obedience, and Earthdog trialing.  Zach may be shown very selectively during this time, and we look forward to seeing this special dog being able to excel in other events.

Zach is a truly special dog and I have been blessed to have him in my life.  He is my little goofball around the house and always brings a smile to my face.  He's really never had a bad day in his life and does anything he can to make people laugh.

Thanks, Mary for sharing Zach!
